July 3rd visiting the vineyards

Today we headed out to the Western Cape for a tour of some of the vineyards in the area. The wine industry in South Africa is huge, much larger than I ever imagined and ranks 16th in the world. Wine has been grown in this area for 350 years, although didn’t become internationally important until the early 90’s. We visited 4 vineyards in the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions. Needless to say it was a long but enjoyable day.

We also visited a rescue for orphaned cheetahs. My first photos of African wildlife, even though it was captive. For a small price you could enter the pens and pet them, we decided to pass.
We also visited the campus of Stellenbosch University, one of the top Medical Universities in the world. I was reminded by our guide that the first heart transplant in the world was done in Cape Town by Dr Chris Barnard. South Africa has an impressive list of firsts, including the development of the CAT scan.

Tonight we are off to one of Cape Town top Seafood restaurants, last night I enjoyed some fresh Western Cape Oysters and Line fish, a local white fish. Keeping it short as we are late in leaving for dinner, ciao.
