July 2nd Arrive in Cape Town

We arrived in Cape Town around 5:15 pm. The airport is very modern and very clean. No issues coming through customs and we were met directly by our Orvis representative. She will be our tour guide for each of the next three days. During our drive to the hotel I was very impressed with City. The city is very modern with many high rise buildings and the road system is very impressive. We have traveled in many foreign countries and none have infrastructure compare to what we have seen so far.
There are quite a few shanty towns along the way from the airport to the hotel. But this is a condition of the fact the standard of living in South Africa is the highest in Africa and attracts a lot of refugees coming from other African countries. These shanty towns are however trying to be replaced with low cost housing. The effort here is to clean up the city before it hosts the World Cup next year.
The Cape Grace is an absolute over the top 5 star++ hotel, every amenity you could want is provided. Here is a night picture of the Marina from our room.
Tomorrow we begin one of three private day tours of the Cape, the city and the Western vineyards including a 60 minute helicopter ride on Saturday that I hope to capture some of the essence of this region.
